📝 Reflections

So, I flipped right after I crossed the finish line. In front of EVERYBODY. I had a rough race and was getting in my head a lot. I was panicking, not relaxing my shoulders, tiring myself out really fast, and quitting early. I wouldn't have won if I had stayed in control of my mental state, but I certainly wouldn't have flipped. It wasn't super dramatic of a flip; rather, I had stressed out and tired out all of my muscles during the race from how tense I was, so when I crabbed after the finish, I didn't have the reaction time or muscle strength to right myself. Obviously, I was upset with how the race went, but I had to reset and get myself on track for the doubles race. The safety launch helped me get my boat to shore, and I luckily had a change of uni and a towel.

On my way to change out of my soaking wet uni, I actually ran into one of the girls in the singles race. We chatted a little bit, but she didn't judge me or ridicule me as I had feared in my head. She also told me that there was a strong chance I could get a rolldown Nationals bid, so getting 6th wasn't the end of the road.

I changed into dry clothes and tried to reset before warming up and launching for my next race.

It took every ounce of self-regulation skills I had ever learned to get myself into the right mindset for the doubles race. I focused on relaxing, and rowing it for the fun of it.

It worked! We decreased our time margin to the 1st place boat all the way down to 4.43 seconds. Logan, in bow, was super helpful in reminding me to release tension and not stay stressed during the race, which massively helped my technique and power. I'm so lucky to have an amazing bow I can really trust, and he is so good at making the calls I need to refocus.
